Accessing and Maintaining Waiver and Other Medicaid Services

Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) officials state waiver and other Medicaid services will not be lost by individuals with disabilities displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Individuals with disabilities who have evacuated out of state may be concerned about losing their waiver or other Medicaid services. However, DHH officials in Medicaid and the Office for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities (OCDD) have stated that will not occur. The state's Medicaid Director has said "we will not terminate services for anyone who has been displaced by the Hurricane."

Those who have evacuated to other states are also wondering if they will be able to access their services. The Assistant Secretary of OCDD has said "The department has already begun discussions on payment issues for those out of state.  As soon as the immediate crisis is over we will make some decisions regarding this and will be communicating those decisions as soon as they are made. And please know we will make every effort to have our decisions based on what makes sense for the person and their family."
